Giants manager: Madison Bumgarner could start Game 4 of World Series

Jamie Square / USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy is willing to pull out all the stops should his team lose Game 3 of the World Series to the Kansas City Royals on Friday.

Bochy revealed during his pregame press conference that both he and pitching coach Dave Righetti have discussed starting staff ace Madison Bumgarner on short rest should the team fall behind 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.

Bumgarner, who has never started on short rest, tossed seven innings of one-run ball in the series opener to pick up the win. The southpaw now boasts a 3-1 record with a sparkling 1.40 ERA this postseason.

Ryan Vogelsong is the current projected starter for Game 4, opposite Royals lefty Jason Vargas.

Having Bumgarner throw Game 4 would also allow him to start Game 7 on short rest if necessary.
