Cardinals' Wainwright undergoes elbow surgery

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright had surgery Friday to alleviate discomfort in his ailing right elbow.

A team official said Wainwright had a ligament trimmed in his right elbow, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright elected to undergo the procedure after seeking a second opinion earlier this week.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak confirmed the report.

The Cardinals had previously stated Wainwright would not need offseason surgery, despite an MRI revealing the right-hander was bothered by an irritated joint. Wainwright was prescribed rest after the Cardinals were eliminated in the NL Championship Series.

Wainwright, 33, was forced to miss a start in June with elbow irritation and missed all of 2011 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He struggled for most of the postseason, but stepped up when it mattered most.

The nine-year veteran tossed seven innings of two-run ball with seven strikeouts in the Cardinals' Game 5 loss.
