Miguel Cabrera: Undergoes Ankle Surgery
Cabrera underwent right ankle surgery Wednesday afternoon to remove bone spurs and to repair a stress fracture in the navicular bone in the top of his foot. He will be evaluated again in three months.
Analysis:
The bone spurs were a known issue that seemed to hamper Cabrera throughout the second half of the season, but the issue with the navicular bone adds a degree of complexity to the procedure that Cabrera underwent this week. That he'll be evaluated in late January prior to the start of spring training suggests that there's a possibility he won't be 100 percent when the Tigers report to Florida in February, as he may be very limited in his workouts in the coming months. Nevertheless, the procedure should offer some much needed relief with the ankle, following a season in which Cabrera hit .313/.371/.524 with 25 homers, 109 RBI and 101 runs scored.
