The Chicago Cubs are shutting down one of their budding stars from the Arizona Fall League.
Shortstop Addison Russell, who has already played 11 games in the instructional league, will now look ahead to trying to crack the team roster at spring training next year, reports CSN team insider Patrick Mooney. The team says he's perfectly healthy and the reason for shutting him down is so he can rest in preparation for next season.
Russell hit .196 with two homers in the 11 games. Those numbers are much lower than his .295/.350/.508 slash line between the team's High-A and Double-A affiliates.
Russell was acquired from Oakland as part of the trade that sent Jeff Samardzija to the Athletics.
