Giants' Peavy looks to contain Kansas City running game

Jake Peavy says the key to his Game 2 start isn't about finding his comfort zone on the mound - it's the exact opposite.

The 33-year-old veteran pitcher is in search of his first career World Series victory Wednesday, while also looking to stake his San Francisco Giants to a commanding 2-0 lead on the road.

With Kansas City mired in a one-game deficit that few teams in recent history have overcome, Peavy knows the Royals will be aggressive in deploying their running game.

Runners on .257 .310 .394 .704

"You can't be in any kind of rhythm," Peavy said Tuesday. "When guys get on base, and especially those speedsters, you have no choice but to be out of rhythm because you're going to have to hold the ball, you'll have to slide step and you'll have to pick off. It's going to be an interesting thing."

The Royals led the majors in steals during the regular season and have swiped a playoff-high 13 bases in this year's postseason. Ned Yost's group didn't attempt a stolen base in Game 1, however, mostly due to Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner's presence on the mound.

"As a right‑hander, it's a little bit different when you can't see the runner," Peavy noted. "We're going to have to do all we can do with varying our times, holding the balls. We've got numerous pickoff plays that we obviously reviewed coming into the series, making sure we have every option and all the ability to stop the running game."

Peavy's caught stealing rate of 43 percent ranked 24th in baseball among qualified pitchers this season as baserunners successfully stole eight bases off the right-hander in 14 attempts.
