MLB betting year in review: The hottest wagers of 2014

Joy R. Absalon / USA TODAY Sports

The end of the MLB betting season is on the horizon, so there's no better time to reflect on some of the top wagers.

Here are four bets that had bettors laughing all the way to the bank during the regular season:

Top money team - Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles posted a stellar 96-66 record to claim the American League East title and Baltimore backers cashed in big on their surprise season. If any given bettor wagered $100 on each of their games, they would have walked away with $3,377. The Los Angeles Angels were the next best bet in the bigs, with their bettors turning a $2,141 profit in the same scenario.

Best under team - San Diego Padres

The Padres posted a 61-95-6 over/under mark thanks to their miserable offense. The Friars ranked dead last in runs per game (3.3), team batting average (.226) and OPS (.634) which went a long way in making them a profitable under play. It also didn't hurt that San Diego pitchers boasted a 3.27 team ERA – the fourth-best mark in the majors.

Best over team - Minnesota Twins

The Twins posted a 87-69-6 O/U record to surprisingly earn the title of the top over team. The 2014 season was dominated by pitching across the board, but the Twins lacked depth behind Phil Hughes in their starting rotation and were scored on often. Minnesota pitchers had a combined 4.57 ERA – the second-worst in the league.

Top money starter - Clayton Kershaw

It's no surprise that the Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander was the most profitable arm. The Dodgers went an incredible 23-4 in his starts and any given bettor would have made $1,582 if they had wagered $100 on each of his outings. Chris Tillman (+$1,520), Matt Shoemaker ($1,221) and Hughes ($1,201) were also surprisingly great bets.
