Denard Span 'would be surprised' if Nationals don't exercise $9-million option for 2015

Though Denard Span's future with the Washington Nationals remains somewhat uncertain, the 30-year-old expects the club to exercise his $9-million for next season.

"I still haven't heard anything yet," Span told MLB.com's Bill Ladson. "I don't know what's going to happen to be honest with you. I would be surprised if it wasn't picked up. You just never know."

Acquired from the Minnesota Twins prior to the 2013 campaign, Span compiled more wins above replacement over the last two seasons than all but nine National League outfielders. The former first-round pick was particularly impressive in 2014, when he hit .302/.355/.416 (113 OPS+) with 52 extra-base hits and 31 stolen bases in 147 games.

"From management all the way down to the coaching staff, the Nationals allowed me to be the player that I am," Span said. "They allowed me to have free reign, just have fun. I think I've learned a lot about myself these last two years. It's a good organization, good teammates, good clubhouse, so yeah it has been a joy these last two years, just back to having fun."

The Nationals have until five days after the conclusion of the World Series to decide whether to exercise Span's option for 2015.
