Rangers want to extend contract of GM Daniels by spring training

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers hope to soon lock up general manager Jon Daniels long term.

Rangers co-chairman Ray Davis said Friday that the organization would like to extend Daniels' contract by the start of spring training, according to Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas.

Daniels, who has been the Rangers' GM since 2005 and was promoted to president of baseball operations last March, has one year remaining on his contract.

The team completed its lengthy search for a new manager Thursday by hiring former Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Jeff Banister, paving the way for the organization to focus its attention on Daniels.

"We've been consumed for the last month on this, so (Daniels' extension) will fall in place," Davis said.

Texas has mainly flourished under Daniels' watch, despite a frustrating 2014 season that saw the Rangers finish in the basement of the American League West.

Year Record Division rank
2009 87-75 2nd of 4
2010 90-72 1st of 4
2011 96-66 1st of 4
2012 93-69 2nd of 4
2013 91-72 2nd of 5
2014 67-95 5th of 5

The four consecutive 90-win seasons were highlighted by back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010-11.

Injuries got the best of the Rangers in 2014, as the club lost a number of key players to season-ending injuries early in the year, including slugger Prince Fielder and left-hander Martin Perez.
