Report: Pirates plan to extend $15.3-million qualifying offer to Russell Martin

Rick Scuteri / USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made it no secret that they want to retain the services of catcher Russell Martin.

Pittsburgh tried to re-sign the soon-to-be free agent to a multiyear deal earlier in the season and plans to extend a $15.3-million qualifying offer if they aren't able to work out an extension, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports

Despite missing 21 games with a strained left hamstring, the 31-year-old was one of the Pirates' offensive leaders this season, hitting .290/.402/.430 with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs in 111 games.

Should Martin, who is coming off a two-year, $17-million deal, decline the qualifying offer and sign elsewhere, the Pirates would receive a draft pick as compensation.
