Mets' Hefner to undergo Tommy John surgery for 2nd time

Jeremy Hefner will once again be going under the knife.

The New York Mets' right-hander announced Thursday he will have Tommy John surgery for the second time in 14 months to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports the operation will be performed Thursday in Florida by renowned surgeon James Andrews.

Hefner, who underwent his initial operation in August 2013, re-injured his UCL while on a minor league rehab assignment. He felt pain in his elbow during an Aug. 6 game at Class A St. Lucie and was diagnosed with a torn UCL and stress fracture of the ulna bone in his right elbow.

Hefner, 28, is 8-15 with a 4.65 ERA over parts of two seasons with the Mets.
