Rangers' Arencibia elects for free agency

Nick Turchiaro / USA TODAY Sports

J.P. Arencibia will look to join his third organization in as many years, as the catcher has elected free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment from the Texas Rangers, according to Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest.

Run out of town after four years with the Toronto Blue Jays, the 28-year-old inked a one-year, $1.8 million deal with the Rangers in December. Arencibia failed to produce in Texas, hitting .177/.239/.369 with 10 home runs, 35 RBIs and 62 strikeouts in 62 games.

Arencibia was previously outrighted to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.
