Report: Yankees begin contract talks with GM Cashman

Despite missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman's job appears to be safe.

The two sides have begun talks on a new contract that would bring Cashman back to New York for an 18th year and beyond, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.

New York's long-term general manager, whose three-year, $9-million deal is set to expire Oct. 31, has helped lead the Yankees to four World Series titles since taking over the position in 1998. But the big-spending Yankees haven't enjoyed recent success, failing to make the postseason in back-to-back years for the first time since 1992-93.

Cashman was unsuccessful in returning the second-place Yankees to the playoffs after going on a near $500-million shopping spree this past offseason to bring in stars Masahiro Tanaka, Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Carlos Beltran, among others.

The Yankees won 84 games in 2014, the club's lowest total in a non-strike shortened season since a 76-win year in 1992.
