Royals turn to 'adrenaline junkie' Shields in 1st playoff game since 1985

Choosing a starter for Tuesday's showdown with the Oakland Athletics wasn't exactly the most difficult decision Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost had to make this year.

After all, one of his pitchers was nicknamed for nights like this.

"Big Game James" Shields will look to make true on his moniker in the American League wild-card play-in, the Royals' first playoff game in 29 years.

"I wear that nickname with pride," Shields, who was given the label for his propensity for pitching well in high-pressure situations, told the New York Times.

Shields has worn the tag well since landing in Kansas City two years ago. The Royals have won 42 of the 68 games he's started since they acquired him from Tampa Bay, while turning in their first consecutive winning seasons in two decades.

A self-described "adrenaline junkie," the hard-throwing right-hander says he's prepared to shoulder the weight of an entire city thirsty for October baseball. A win Tuesday night secures the Royals a date in the AL Division Series against the Los Angeles Angels.

"That’s what I like to play for," Shields told the Kansas City Star. "That moment. I enjoy the moment. I love the moment."

If his nickname is a sign of things to come, Royals fans will be treated to more moments like Tuesday this fall.
