Mets' Mejia to undergo surgery for sports hernia

New York Mets closer Jenrry Mejia will undergo surgery next week to repair a sports hernia that has bothered him throughout the second half of the campaign, according to ESPN.

Mejia, who was moved to the bullpen after opening the season in the rotation, will have the procedure done Oct. 2 in Philadelphia by Dr. Bill Meyers.

The flamboyant 24-year-old recorded 27 saves with 3.77 ERA over 60 appearances this season, notching 94 strikeouts while issuing 40 walks in 90 2/3 innings.
