Mets' deGrom, Lagares, Herrera shut down for season

With the 2014 season nearing its conclusion, the New York Mets elected Tuesday to shut down rookie right-hander Jacob deGrom and another two players nursing various ailments, manager Terry Collins told ESPN.

Though deGrom stated after his most recent outing that he "want[s] to make another start," the club will instead shut down the 26-year-old Rookie of the Year candidate who's already logged 178 2/3 innings this season. Rafael Montero will start in deGrom's stead as the season's final week winds down.

Juan Lagares, meanwhile, will not play again this season as he continues to recover from the elbow strain that has sidelined him since Sept. 16. However, the 25-year-old center fielder will not require surgery.

Dilson Herrera, who was promoted from Double-A Binghampton in late August, is also expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a quadriceps strain during Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves.
