Despite loss, Orioles clinch home-field advantage for ALDS

Brad Penner / USA Today Sports

On what would have otherwise been a pretty miserable night for the Baltimore Orioles - who were one-hit by Michael Pineda and the New York Yankees in a 5-0 loss - the club received a measure of solace when the Detroit Tigers laid an egg of their own, a 2-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

The result of the two games means the Orioles have officially clinched home-field advantage for the American League Division Series (ALDS).

The Orioles, who clinched the AL East on Tuesday, are still mathematically in contention for the best record in the American League, but sitting three games behind the Los Angeles Angels with just six to play, that scenario is looking increasingly far-fetched.

In any event, when the ALDS kicks off on Oct. 2, the Orioles will open a playoff series at home for the first time since 1997.
