Yankees' Beltran likely to undergo season-ending elbow surgery

Adam Hunger / USA TODAY Sports

New York Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran will see a team doctor Saturday to determine whether or not he should go ahead with season-ending elbow surgery, reports MLB.com.

The 37-year-old has been limited to 109 games this season by bone spurs in his right elbow, and deciding to shut him down with eight games remaining and the Yankees falling out of playoff contention seems logical.

"They said to me today that it was just better for me to just go on with the surgery," Beltran said following Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. "I tried to play, it just continued to bothered me - forearm's tight - it's the same thing."

More troubling for the Yankees is the fact Beltran, who is hitting .233 with 15 homer runs and 49 RBIs, is in the first year of a three-season, $45-million contract. If the veteran does elect for surgery now, he should be be ready in time for spring training in 2015.
