Yankees' Teixeira says wrist injury won't end his season

Anthony Gruppuso / USA TODAY Sports

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira believes his team still has an outside chance to make the playoffs and is willing to compromise his health to remain a part of the stretch drive.

Teixeria will ask for a third cortisone injection to treat his wrist injury and intends to keep playing, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

Teixeira left the seventh inning of Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays with soreness in his surgically-repaired right wrist. The injury has nagged at him for almost two seasons now.

The 34-year-old is hitting only .216, but his 21 home runs and 58 RBIs are irreplaceable in manager Joe Girardi's lineup.

The Yankees fell 4 1/2 games behind the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners in the wild card standings following the loss. They could be as many as five games out depending on the outcome of Saturday night's contests.
