Brewers' Reynolds on 8th-inning gaffe: 'I got in the game and just messed up'

During the eighth inning of arguably the biggest game of the Milwaukee Brewers' season, first baseman Mark Reynolds couldn't keep track of the outs.

Milwaukee entered the frame with a 2-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. With one out and a runner on first, Reynolds fielded a grounder and proceeded to tag first, ignoring the runner who broke for second.

"Everyone had their hands on their heads," Reynolds said about the moment he realized his mistake, according to MLB.com. "It happens; it just happened to be in a crucial part of the game in a crucial game we needed to win.

"I feel bad about it. I messed up."

The Cardinals went on to score a pair of runs in the inning to tie the game before catcher Tony Cruz hit a walk-off single in the 13th inning to push the Brewers to 3 1/2 games back of the second wild card.

"Mistakes like that can't happen, obviously," Reynolds said, "especially at this point in the season. (Brewers starter Kyle) Lohse pitched his (rear end) off, these guys battled hard and I got in the game and just messed up."
