American League Game Summary - Seattle at LA Angels of Anaheim
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Logan Morrison hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to lift the Seattle Mariners over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 3-1, in the finale of a four-game series.
Kevin Jepsen (0-2) recorded two quick outs to start the ninth. Kendrys Morales kept Seattle's at-bat going with a single and was replaced on the basepaths by James Jones. After Kyle Seager was intentionally walked, Morrison smacked a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right.
"That was the biggest hit of my life," said Morrison. "We're in a race and we need every win. We have a bunch of guys who don't know how to quit."
The Mariners sent Fernando Rodney to the mound in the bottom half. Hank Conger hit a solo homer to make it 3-1. Rodney ended up stranding a runner on third to record his 46th save of the season.
Seattle sits one game behind Oakland for the AL's second wild card spot.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia gave his regulars the day off after clinching the AL West on Wednesday.
Seattle starter Felix Hernandez gave up three hits and struck out 11 over seven scoreless innings. Tom Wilhelmsen (3-2) recorded the final two outs in the eighth to pick up the win.
Wade LeBlanc got the start for the Angels and allowed three hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Jered Weaver, who was scheduled to start, was given the night off.
"We made the decision this morning to go with LeBlanc tonight," said Scioscia. "Wade came through."
