Derek Jeter snaps 2nd longest hitless streak of career

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Baseball isn't easy; just ask one of the sport's all-time greats.

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has hit his way into championships, All-Star games, and - presumably - the Hall of Fame. On Wednesday, he hit himself out of the second-longest slump of his career.

Jeter's sixth-inning single off Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb snapped a streak of 28 consecutive at-bats without a hit.

Despite the slump-buster, Jeter is still mired in the worst offensive year of his career. He's slugging an MLB-worst .297 and his .270 wOBA represents the lowest mark in his 20 major-league seasons.

This visual from ESPN Stats & Info captures just how ineffective Jeter has been protecting the middle of the plate during his hitless streak, entering play Wednesday:

The longest Jeter went without a hit came during a 32-at-bat skid in April 2004.
