Marlins announce Giancarlo Stanton done for season

Eric Hartline / USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins are shutting down their National League MVP candidate.

Marlins Manager Mike Redmond stated earlier Wednesday that Giancarlo Stanton was unlikely to play again this season after taking a pitch to the face from Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Mike Fiers on Sept. 11, and suffering facial fractures.

The 27-year-old outfielder was a major reason why the Marlins were in contention for a playoff spot well into September, boasting a .288 average with 37 home runs and 105 RBIs.

Stanton, along with Los Angeles Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw, are considered the favorites for the NL MVP award.
