VIDEO: Jeter beaning prompts benches to clear in Yankees, Rays game

The Tampa Bay Rays organization honored New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter with farewell gifts prior to Tuesday's game at Tropicana Field.

Rays reliever Steven Geltz was less kind.

Geltz presented Jeter a fastball to the left elbow to begin the eighth inning, leading to Joe Girardi's ejection after the Yankees manager stormed out of the dugout enraged.

A half inning later, tensions escalated even further.

Yankees right-hander David Phelps was tossed for nearly hitting Kevin Kiermaier in the bottom of the eighth, as was bench coach Tony Pena.

It marked the second time in four games the Rays hit Jeter with a pitch, and the fifth time during that stretch a Yankee has been beaned.

"If you are going to pitch inside, pitch the right way," Girardi said, via ESPNNewYork.com, after the Yankees' fifth loss in six games. "If you can't pitch inside, don't pitch inside. We are not pin cushions."
