Giants' Pagan could need offseason back surgery to correct bulging disk

Kelley L Cox / USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco Giants outfielder Angel Pagan's back issues forced him out of the lineup for a second straight game Tuesday as the team discusses the possibility of offseason surgery.

Pagan has been struggling with a bulging disk in his back, missing 45 games earlier this season as a result of the same injury. Manager Bruce Bochy did mention offseason back surgery to a CSN Bay Area reporter, but said no decisions had been made yet. Pagan finished 1-for-10 in a weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

San Francisco enters Tuesday holding the second wild card. Bochy spoke about the importance of Pagan's bat in the lineup.

“If you look at the evidence, we miss him when he’s not in the lineup,” Bochy told the San Francisco Gate. “He’s our leadoff hitter. He’s our catalyst. It’s tough when he’s not in the lineup. It’s tougher than what you would think.”
