Return still uncertain for Astros' Springer

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

George Springer ran the bases Sunday for the first time since aggravating his quadriceps strain in early August, however, the Houston Astros remain unsure if the 24-year-old rookie will return this season, according to MLB.com.

"It's just a day-to-day kind of thing and we'll see how it feels and how he reacts to what happens," interim manager Tom Lawless said. "We'll see what happens."

Springer last took the field for the Astros on July 19 and suffered a setback in his recovery while running the bases during a rehab game Aug. 6. The former first-round pick continues to take batting practice and complete outfield drills, but the club won't put him on the field until he is 100 percent.

"Do we want to risk putting him out there?" Lawless said. "If he's healthy and totally healthy, then we have no problem."
