Suspension could cost Papelbon automatic contract extension

Eric Hartline / USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jonathan Papelbon was served a seven-game suspension for an "inappropriate gesture" after being ejected Sunday. Along with at least a potential week's worth of appearances, the move could cost him a full year on the end of his contract.

When he signed with the Phillies before the 2012 season, Papelbon's contract included a vesting option for the 2016 season that would pay him $13 million. To trigger the option, Papelbon can either finish 55 games in 2015, or a combined 100 games between 2014 and 2015.

Papelbon has already finished off 50 games this season and the Phillies only have 12 games remaining. He'll need to repeat his performance next season as a 34-year old to earn himself a handsome payday in 2016.
