Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

A day after leaving the second game of a double-header due to ankle soreness, Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera finds himself on the bench Sunday for the series finale with the Chicago White Sox.

Cabrera, who has seen his production decline this season as the result of numerous ailments, has been dealing with pain in his ankle over the last month.

Earlier Sunday, manager Brad Ausmus defended Cabrera, saying that the nine-time All-Star has played through injuries over the last two seasons that many players wouldn't.

In 133 games this season, Cabrera is slashing .299/.363/.486 with 17 home runs and 91 RBI, a far cry from his .349/.442/.661 line with 43 home runs and 133 RBI he posted in the same amount of games a year ago.

The Tigers enter Sunday in a tie with the Kansas City Royals for the division lead in the American League Central.
