Giants' Petit sets major league record by retiring 46 consecutive batters

Lance Iversen / USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit's run of dominance has landed him in Major League Baseball's record books.

Petit, who was making a spot start for the struggling Tim Lincecum, struck out Colorado Rockies shortstop Charlie Culberson to break Mark Buerhle's record, which he set in 2009 as a member of the Chicago White Sox.

Pitcher Jordan Lyles followed Culberson's at bat with a two-out double, ending Petit's streak.

The seven-year veteran's supremacy over the opposition was carried across seven appearances, where he struck out 21 batters in 15 innings.

Petit came one out short of a perfect game last season against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
