Tigers' Price posts second-shortest start of his career Wednesday vs. Yankees

For a team thought to have an embarrassment of riches in their rotation, the Detroit Tigers have been struggling of late to find a lot of positives from their starting pitchers.

David Price, acquired at the non-waiver trade deadline and one of three Cy Young winners on the Tigers' staff, had one of the worst starts of his big-league career Wednesday night against the visiting New York Yankees.

The left-hander was removed in the third inning after allowing nine straight hits before recording an out in addition to giving up eight runs off 12 hits and one walk.

Despite Wednesday's hiccup, Price has otherwise been sharp for the Tigers. In four previous starts he's posted a 1-1 record to go with a 2.35 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings.

With Anibal Sanchez out for an indefinite amount of time with a pectoral strain, Detroit is going to need more out of Justin Verlander and Robbie Ray, who have a 4.98 ERA and 11.36 ERA respectively in August.
