Verlander tests sore shoulder: 'Definitely felt a whole lot better'

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander says he's encouraged by how his shoulder responded after making throws from 60 feet for 10 minutes at Tropicana Field on Tuesday.

Verlander, who revealed last week he's been pitching through pain for an undisclosed period of time, is expected to work a bullpen session Thursday in anticipation of making his next start.

How Verlander feels Wednesday will likely determine the club's next course of action.

The 31-year-old last pitched Aug. 11 at Pittsburgh, allowing four earned runs on four hits with two walks in just one inning of work. He was removed from the game with what the team described as "shoulder soreness."

A subsequent MRI showed no structural damage.
