Pirates' Clint Barmes out 4-6 weeks with groin injury

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Clint Barmes has a Grade 3 adducter (groin) sprain, which will sideline him for 4-6 weeks.

Analysis:

Barmes will be headed for the disabled list, after injuring his groin muscle making a throw during Saturday's batting practice. Jordy Mercer had been the Pirates' primary shortstop anyway, but the team will call up Michael Martinez from Triple-A Indianapolis in case a reserve infielder is needed. Utility man James Harrison could also see reserve infield reps if Mercer needs a day off.
