Alex Wood's volatile campaign continued Tuesday, as the 23-year-old left-hander was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett to open up a roster spot for right-hander Jordan Walden, who's set to return from a hamstring injury.

Wood opened season in Atlanta's rotation, but was relegated to the bullpen in early May and proceeded to fashion a 4.70 ERA over 11 relief appearances. After Wood's relocation to the bullpen, opponents hit .302/.362/.444 against him, a second-round pick in 2012.

Walden, meanwhile, will attempt to bolster a bullpen that has managed 16 meltdowns over the last month, the second-most in the National League. The 26-year-old authored a 2.92 ERA over 14 appearances before landing on the disabled list, managing a career-best 37.3 percent strikeout rate.
