The Pirates' exhaustive search for a defensive complement at shortstop has compelled the club to maintain communication with Clint Barmes, according to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The 34-year-old isn't particularly adept with the bat -- he boasts a career 71 wRC+ -- but he's proven a tremendously reliable defender up the middle, routinely posting impressive scores in Ultimate Zone Rating and Defensive Runs Saved.  Though he hit just .211/.249/.309 in 2013, he produced 12 defensive runs saved, good for second among big-league shortstops (min. 800 innings).
