Bumgarner's season ends to make way for Zito

Barry Zito stepped into the San Francisco Giants' rotation Wednesday in what will likely be his last start for the franchise.

To make way for the veteran, 24-year-old Madison Bumgarner's season ended early.

"That's the front office's job to do whatever they see fit...I didn't try to argue too much. They're the boss, I'm working for them," Bumgarner said to MLB.com of the decision to scratch him from his final start.

With a 13-9 record, a 2.77 ERA and 199 strikeouts, there's no question the left-hander would have liked to have another outing before the season wraps up.

"Definitely. Nobody in here's ever going to say, 'Well, I think I'm done this year,'" he said.

With one more strikeout on the year, Bumgarner would become the franchise's sixth left-hander to tally 200 strikeouts in a season.
