Sale to start Game 1 of ALDS vs. Astros

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

In case it wasn't obvious, the Boston Red Sox made it official Sunday when they announced left-hander Chris Sale will start Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Houston Astros on Thursday.

The team hasn't named its rotation beyond Game 1, however.

Manager John Farrell did say that having Sale come back to pitch on three days' rest is a possibility, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.

Sale is a contender for the Cy Young after a stellar first season in Boston, during which he was 17-8 with a 2.90 ERA and a major league-leading 308 strikeouts.

The 28-year-old is 5-1 with a 1.31 ERA against the Astros during his career, striking out 65 in six starts. This will be his first career postseason start.
