After the St. Louis Cardinals traded starter Mike Leake to the Seattle Mariners, the club decided the time was right to get a look at one of their promising pitching prospects.

Right-hander Jack Flaherty will be promoted and make his major-league debut Friday against the San Francisco Giants, the team announced.

Flaherty is ranked as the Cardinals second-best pitching prospect behind Alex Reyes, who is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Flaherty slots in as MLB's 53rd-best prospect out of its top 100 midseason list.

Luke Weaver, another promising Cardinals hurler, who made eight starts last year, has been terrific of late. Entering Thursday, Weaver has a 2.48 ERA in seven games (four starts), nine walks, and 36 strikeouts.

Pitching in Double- and Triple-A this season, Flaherty has fantastic numbers. In 25 combined starts, he has a 2.18 ERA with 35 walks, 145 strikeouts, and 1.04 WHIP across 148 innings.
