St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Carpenter left Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs in the second inning with right quadriceps tightness, the team announced, not long after he was thrown out - and tagged hard by catcher Willson Contreras - in a play at the plate.

After reaching on an error by Javier Baez to lead off the game, Carpenter ended up getting cut down at the plate by Addison Russell while trying to score from first on a two-out double to left by Jedd Gyorko. Carpenter played the field in the bottom of the first, but was replaced at first base by Luke Voit in the bottom of the second.

Heading into Sunday's series finale at Wrigley Field, Carpenter, a three-time All-Star, had hit .248/.379/.450 (118 OPS+) with 14 homers and 21 doubles in 92 games.
