Report: Rays send scout to see Giants' Strickland

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays appear to be looking to add some punch to their bullpen.

A Rays scout was present during San Francisco Giants right-hander Hunter Strickland's appearances on Friday and Saturday against the San Diego Padres, according to Chris Haft of MLB.com.

Strickland pitched well in those two outings, striking out three with no runs allowed.

A team typically reliant on a dominant bullpen, the Rays have struggled a little in that department this season. Entering Sunday, Tampa Bay's relievers own a 4.37 ERA and 1.35 WHIP - fifth highest in the American League.

Though Strickland has struggled with his control at times this season (he's issued a career high 5.2 BB/9), he's combined to 36 strikeouts in 33 innings, a 1.91 ERA and has maintained his fastball velocity of 96.3-mph.

The 28-year-old is arbitration eligible next season and is under team control until 2022.
