Syndergaard: Mr. Met is going through an 'emotional breakdown'

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

While one may expect New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard to relish his arch nemesis' extremely public fall from grace, due to their lengthy, and often tense feud, this may not be the case.

With Mr. Met garnering headlines for flipping off a fan, who better than Syndergaard to offer his analysis? He possibly knows the embattled mascot better than anyone, and comes off as sympathetic.

"I think he’s going through an emotional breakdown right now," Syndergaard told Yahoo's Tim Hines, per Chris Cwik. "The whole middle finger thing … I don’t know … he’s got to turn himself around."

One may read a touch of sarcasm in Syndergaard's tone, but it could just be masking a desire for his enemy to overcome the odds. A victory over an opponent is less satisfying if the playing field is uneven, after all.

On the other hand, Syndergaard's teammate Matt Harvey is probably just happy attention has shifted away from him.
