Report: Padres have had 'preliminary dialogue' with teams about Brad Hand

Two things felt pretty certain entering the 2017 campaign: the San Diego Padres would be out of contention early, and they'd be willing to deal away relievers by midseason.

Nearly two months into the season, it appears both prognostications are coming true and, according to a report from Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, "the Padres have had preliminary dialogue with a number of teams, and rival officials believe (Brad) Hand could be the first player dealt."

The Padres are a rebuilding team considered to be "open for business," according to a report that surfaced Wednesday from ESPN's Buster Olney. Of course, Hand is likely improving his portfolio now that the team is awarding him save opportunities.

On Wednesday night against the New York Mets, Hand was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning. While Hand loaded the bases with nobody out, he retired the following three batters in order, including two crucial strikeouts to earn his first save of the year.

In 26 innings this year, the 27-year-old lefty boasts an impressive 32.7 percent strikeout rate and 2.84 FIP.

Lin pointed out that fellow Padres relievers Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter could entice some teams looking for relatively inexpensive bullpen help down the stretch.
