Padres' Carter Capps: Endures rough rehab outing

Capps (elbow) allowed five runs on three hits on two walks while recording only two outs Thursday during a rehab appearance for Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Analysis:

Capps allowed four runs in one of his other rehab outings, so he hasn't exactly proven ready for big-league action. The right-hander had entered the season as a popular speculative closer, but Brandon Maurer (3.12 ERA, 12 strikeouts and one walk in 8.2 innings, plus 4-for-4 on save chances) has held down the role so far. Whenever Capps returns, however, it may take longer than expected for him to return to high-leverage innings, let alone knock Maurer off the saves throne.
