Angels' Matt Shoemaker: Solid in five-inning victory Wednesday

Shoemaker (1-1) gave up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings in Wednesday's 8-5 win over the Athletics. He struck out six.

Analysis:

The veteran right-hander notched 13 swinging strikes and was able to stay away from the long ball for the first time in five starts this season. After an ugly seven-run performance versus the Mariners on April 9, Shoemaker has bounced back to allow just a pair of earned runs apiece in his subsequent three trips to the mound, lowering his ERA from 7.71 to 4.73 in the process. He'll look to keep matters going in the right direction in a rematch against Seattle at Safeco Field on Tuesday.
