The St. Louis Cardinals will be without one of their most consistent players when they kick off a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Busch Stadium on Tuesday.

Matt Carpenter will serve a one-game suspension for bumping home plate umpire John Tumpane on Sunday, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold. He was angry following a called third strike in the seventh inning of the Cardinals' eventual 6-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Both Carpenter and manager Mike Matheny received ejections for arguing balls and strikes. Carpenter was initially penciled into Tuesday's lineup, batting second. Aledmys Diaz will instead hit second with Matt Adams taking the field at first base.

The 31-year-old infielder has gotten off to a somewhat slow start, batting only .236 with two home runs and five RBIs through 17 games. Normally a doubles monster, he has hit only one two-bagger so far.

He should be back in the Cardinals lineup for Wednesday night's game.
