Tempers flared Saturday afternoon at Target Field, where the benches cleared in the bottom of the fifth when Minnesota Twins slugger Miguel Sano shoved Detroit Tigers catcher James McCann after narrowly avoiding a pitch from Matt Boyd that sailed behind him - a presumed retaliatory gesture for JaCoby Jones getting hit in the face by a pitch earlier in the game.

Cooler heads prevailed - the incident didn't escalate and play soon resumed - while both Sano and Boyd were ejected from the game. Joe Mauer came off the bench to replace Sano, who started at first base, and left-hander Blaine Hardy came out of the bullpen to take over for Boyd.

"I think we were just trying to pitch in right there," McCann told MLB.com's Jason Beck of the Boyd offering that sparked the fracas. "Must have gotten away from him."
