Watch: JaCoby Jones leaves game after taking pitch to face
In an ugly incident during a matinee between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins, Tigers center fielder JaCoby Jones was hit in the face by a 90-mph four-seam fastball that got away from Justin Haley.
Haley, who'd just entered the game, worked Jones into a 1-2 count in the third inning. Jones was immediately tended to by Tigers medical staff and was replaced by Andrew Romine.
After the Tigers' 5-4 win, manager Brad Ausmus said Jones suffered a left lip laceration and was sent for a CT scan, and the club later announced he will be placed on the disabled list ahead of Sunday's game.
This isn't the first time this season that a batter has been hit in the face by a pitch. Keon Broxton is a noteworthy instance, but was sidelined for just a few games thanks to the extra protective flap he wears on his helmet. Perhaps instances like these will raise awareness around the league about wearing the extra flap.
