Report: Giants concerned Bumgarner will miss more than 2 months

Madison Bumgarner is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks after spraining his shoulder and bruising his ribs in a dirt bike accident Thursday, but there is reportedly concern in the San Francisco Giants organization that the ace left-hander will be out longer than two months, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

The club will get more information in the next few days on Bumgarner, who was briefly hospitalized and diagnosed with a grade 1 or 2 AC sprain in his pitching shoulder after wiping out while riding his dirt bike in the Denver area on Thursday's off day.

"The main thing here is to be grateful he's not hurt worse than he is," catcher Buster Posey told Alex Pavlovic of CSNBayArea.com. "You have to look at that. We're thankful he's not hurt any worse."

Placed on the disabled list Friday for the first time in his nine-year career, Bumgarner, a four-time All-Star, will be replaced in San Francisco's rotation for the time being by left-hander Ty Blach, who has managed a 5.79 ERA over six relief appearances so far in 2017. Bumgarner, who has logged more innings since the start of 2011 (1,303 2/3) than all but three pitchers, posted a 3.00 ERA (126 ERA+) and a career-best 7.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio in four starts before landing on the DL.

"I'm sure looking back, Madison wishes he hadn’t gone on," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He was remorseful. Hopefully this is a lesson learned throughout our club and sports, that you’ve got to be careful.”
