Correa suffers hand contusion after getting hit by fastball

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Astros are breathing some huge sighs of relief after this one.

Star shortstop Carlos Correa was forced to leave Saturday's game against the Oakland Athletics after taking a 95 mph fastball from Frankie Montas off his right hand in the ninth inning. Correa immediately fell to the ground in pain clutching his hand, and was tended to by Astros trainers before being helped into the clubhouse after a brief delay.

But the news quickly shifted to hopeful after the Astros' 10-6 victory over Oakland, as the team announced Correa only suffered a right hand contusion on the play and X-rays on his hand came back negative.

"I thought it was going to be a lot worse," Correa said, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. "Thank god (there's) no fracture."

The 22-year-old added that he hopes to only miss one day of action. Manager A.J. Hinch said that an exact timetable has yet to be determined.

Correa is hitting .234/.315/.298 with a homer and three RBIs through his first 12 games of the season.
