Bumgarner: Dirt bike outing 'not the most responsible decision'

Denny Medley / USA TODAY Sports

You don't have to tell Madison Bumgarner he messed up.

With his left arm wrapped in a sling, the 27-year-old spoke to reporters Monday for the first time since suffering a left shoulder sprain and bruised ribs in a dirt bike accident. It didn't take him long to admit his choice of entertainment Thursday wasn't the greatest idea.

"It's terrible. Obviously that was not my intentions when I set out to enjoy the off day. I realize that's definitely not the most responsible decision I've made," Bumgarner said, according to The Associated Press. "It sucks not being able to be out here with my guys and try to help us win some games.

"It's just very unfortunate. I've talked to a lot them. They know where I'm at and everybody's been super supportive, too - the organization, the guys, everything."

Bumgarner, who underwent a second MRI on Monday, shed light on the details surrounding the incident, which took place in Denver on the Giants' off day before facing the Colorado Rockies on Friday. Bumgarner was riding a rented bike alongside two relatives in the mountains and was on his way back to the truck when he crashed, according to ABC7 News' Casey Pratt.

Thankfully, he landed on what he described as mostly dirt.

"It wasn't quite as groomed as our dirt infield," he said, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.
