Baez relives collision with Heyward: 'That's a really big man coming at me'

Javy Baez was extremely lucky to avoid serious injury.

Tracking a fly ball in shallow center field in the sixth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, Baez collided with teammate Jason Heyward in an encounter that left Baez lying on the field in pain. Thankfully, Baez did not have to undergo concussion protocol after the incident and was diagnosed with just a left eye contusion, though he knows it could've been worse.

"As soon as I turned around I saw J-Hey coming at me ... That’s a really big man coming at me," Baez told the Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer. "It was really scary.

"I was trying to feel my teeth (after the hit), and after I felt my teeth I was OK. I've got them. I've got all of them."

The collision was eerily reminiscent of the incident that tore Kyle Schwarber's ACL and ruled him out for the entire 2016 regular season, when he collided with former teammate Dexter Fowler exactly one year prior to Baez and Heyward's collision.

With a scary precedent already set with Schwarber, it's no surprise members of the Cubs were relieved to hear that no one is set to miss any time due to injury this time around.

"It looked pretty violent," shortstop Addison Russell told Wittenmyer. "I'm just glad everyone's OK."
