Report: Mets have looked into acquiring Fister

Injuries to Steven Matz and Seth Lugo have depleted the New York Mets' pitching staff, and the team has apparently turned to a slim free-agent market to check on a possible replacement.

New York's front office has looked into right-hander Doug Fister, according to Jon Heyman of FanRagSports, who reports the club also checked in on former Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey before he signed with the Chicago White Sox.

Fister, 33, could provide the Mets with an option for both their rotation and bullpen after he pitched to a 12-13 mark with a 4.64 ERA for the Houston Astros last season.

He could also provide them with some experienced insurance in case youngsters Robert Gsellman or Rafael Montero falter in their respective roles.

The veteran Fister made 32 starts and pitched 180 1/3 innings for the Astros last year and has twice surpassed the 200-innings mark, so it's a bit of a surprise he's still available, although he could be considered out of the price range of clubs after making $7 million in 2016.

Over the course of his eight-year career, Fister has pitched for four teams, amassing a 77-76 record with a 3.60 ERA during 212 appearances, 199 of which have been starts.
